Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Wednesday 4th June 1.30pm

Meeting to Discuss an Area Action Plan for Wallington

Colin, Richard & I met with Lyn Gleeson, Executive Member for Planning, Economic Development and Regeneration; Darren Richards, Executive Head of Planning, Transport and Highways and Jeff Wilson, Head of Planning, to put the case for drawing up an Area Action Plan for Wallington. Along with our residents, we are concerned that despite being the second largest shopping area in Sutton, many years had passed without any significant attention from planning. Colin, Richard & I set out the decline of the centre and stated that whilst we accept that Sutton must have immediate priority, Wallington needed to be timetabled in for attention otherwise it would never receive the attention it requires. As Wallington has been identified as an area that could support additional housing, an Area Action Plan would enable us to plan development of the area and ensure that acceptable development was identified quickly and progress made smoothly. It would allow planning to work towards an overall vision, rather than needing to respond to piecemeal development. Darren Richards highlighted the SWELTRAC proposals in progress, and the impact they would have on Wallington. It was thought that this was an additional reason to start

looking at a plan now so that the transport plans could be linked into the Area Action Plan. Lyn and Jeff pointed out the resources issues, with Planning currently experiencing a heavy workload, however Lyn expressed support for the plight of Wallington. It was agreed that Jeff would prepare a report setting out the requirements of a plan for Wallington in terms of resources which could go to the Executive for consideration. With deadlines agreed Colin, Richard & I were happy with this proposal.
