Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Launch of the Mental Health Carers’ Manual

It has taken four years to bring this manual to fruition so it was with some pride that staff from the Sutton Carers Centre announced its launch. The manual looks great and is also available on CD. Carers in general get a raw deal in terms of acknowledgement of the huge contribution they make, but carers of people with mental health problems often get the least attention. In Sutton there is a dedicated team based at the Carers Centre who provide support for this group of carers. It is from them that I get the most casework as they tell me it often feels that they are banging their heads against a brick wall trying to get recognition of these carers’ needs. Sutton Council is quite good at being aware of carers so if this is still the situation for carers of people with mental health problems here, I worry about those carers in less understanding authorities.

Also speaking at the launch was Drew Lindon the lead on carers looking after people with mental health problems at The Princess Royal Trust for Carers. He commented on the New Carers Strategy launched today. Although it was a step in the right direction he felt that there was still a lot more that could be done to recognise and help carers. Ken Fish, a carer drew attention to the fact that there had been no increase in the carers allowance, and that resources were cited as the reason. I pointed out the short-sightedness of the government in using this excuse as if carers were insufficiently supported their own health, both mental & physical, would become a future drain on NHS resources.
