Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Blog Suspension

As we have now entered the run up to the council elections there are few major meetings left to report on. The purpose of this blog was to detail some of my work as your councillor, with a bit of information & opinion thrown in, so I feel it is appropriate to suspend postings until after the election.

Also, with the Council elections being held on 6th May, and the General Election expected on the same day, the political mud-slinging has already begun in the local press. It devalues the political debate and I don’t want this blog becoming another forum for this to take place.

This blog gets plenty of hits from a wide range of sources so if the residents of Wallington South see fit to re-elect me I will resume posting after the election.

I will leave you with one last thought: all councillors have to either live, work or own property in the borough where they are elected. This means they pay council tax at the same rates as the residents they represent. They therefore have a vested interest in keeping the council tax as low as they possibly can given the funding they have to work with. In the end it is a trade off between what services you want the council to provide or whether you would forgo some services to get extra money in your pocket. You can find details of what services the council does provide and how much they cost in the Dec 09 edition of Sutton Scene.

The Liberal Democrat manifesto for Sutton has been launched and you can read it here. It sets out our plans for the future of services in Sutton and I am proud to have played a small part in its drafting.
