10am Carers Coffee Morning

As interim Carers Champion I attended this special coffee morning to celebrate Carers Week. I met and spoke with a number of carers I had not seen before, as well as seeing a number of familiar faces. As always it was a convivial event.

12.30pm Tour of Durand Regeneration project

Before

I met with Rick Martinez the officer managing the Durand regeneration project for a tour of Durand Close to see the extent of the work programme now that phase one of construction had begun. On site I was able to see the type of building that was being demolished and replaced. The extent of the site was large and could expect to take a number of years considering that phase one of the project only commenced in November 2009. However a review of the new homes and landscaping planned showed how worthwhile the project would be to improve the quality of life and accommodation of those previously housed on the Durand Estate. The new accommodation would be a mix of flats and houses.

Rick showed me how the plans would fit in with work to improve the area along the River Wandle. He also explained how the residents themselves had helped shape and design the project, with support from the ward councillors. I was shown around the residents’ community centre and was impressed by the local people who gave their time voluntarily to work at the centre. As a result of demand from residents it had been agreed to incorporate a new community centre as part of the redevelopment.

Rick also gave me a whistle-stop tour of other sites connected to the project which had already been completed to give me an idea of the standard of work, and briefed me on other sites where work has begun.
