Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Monday 21st June 6pm

Tour of BedZED

All councillors received an invitation for a tour of the borough’s flagship eco-village, BedZED. The tour was conducted by BioRegional, the local environmental organisation behind BedZED based in Hackbridge.

After welcome refreshments we were shown around one of the apartments in the development. Various sustainable design features were pointed out and explained. The design stages of the colourful cowls containing turbines so that they turn to catch the wind was detailed. We saw for ourselves the green roof and internal features such as a deliberately visible energy meter.

The development has demonstrated significantly reduced carbon & energy usage and also shows how this sort of environment gently encourages residents to live more sustainably. For me what was significant was how pleasant the apartments were, showing that living sustainably doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

We were then given a presentation providing more background about BioRegional and its aims.

When the project was first in development it was considered controversial, now we have recently learnt that it has been voted the fourth most significant green building in the world.
