Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Monday 31st January 2011 10am

Town Centre Partnership Executive

This is a meeting of council members and officers, Sutton Town Centre business partners, Sutton Police representatives and voluntary sector reps, chaired by Deputy Borough Commander Chas Bailey.

Superintendent Phil Willis and new Town Centre Inspector Richard Hall provided feedback on town centre safety over the Christmas and new year period. The high profile policing measures had paid off with shoplifting and pickpocketing considerably reduced on the previous year. Local shops had expressed their satisfaction with the policing levels and the presence of the CCTV van in the high street was felt to have a positive impact.

Amanda Cherrington updated on progress with the BID and advised that the next steering group meeting was next week. It was proving difficult to get hold of the right person to make the voting decision for some of the larger chain stores, but all efforts were being made to make contact.

Darren Richards updated on the town centre regeneration, with the job signed off as completed and the twelve month snagging period underway. The contractors were working through the snagging lists and a further stage four safety audit would be completed after twelve months.

Sally Blomfield advised of progress with development in the Lodge Place area and Clare Gray gave a presentation about the High Street crossroads conservation area and locally listed buildings.

Martin Furtauer-Hayes, the town centre manager provided details of future events planned for the period to September. These would include a farmers market, French Market, a bookfair and performances from the Secombe Theatre.

There was some discussion around the possibility of holding an annual Sutton event and a task group was formed to investigate this further.
