Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Monday 14th February 11.30am

Economic Development Advisory Group

The meeting started with a presentation from Toby Fox of 3FoxInternational and White Label Consultants. Mr Fox explained the work they had done for other local authorities assisting them in promoting the development and business opportunities in their areas. The offer was good and the timing was perfect for us so it was agreed to take this offer forward.

Sally Blomfield gave a presentation about the Sutton Town Centre Conservation Area with particular emphasis on the evidence of economic benefits to the town of this proposal. She explained that the work involved had needed to be undertaken for the Site Development Policies DPD, and strengthened that document. It was explained that the conservation area would not present a burden on local businesses as it just meant a requirement for any future development to be considerate of the heritage of the area, and had the possibility of attracting additional funding. In other town and district centres the establishment of a conservation area had been shown to add value to the businesses and property within the area.

Mandy Cherrington gave a briefing on the Government White Paper – Local Growth. It was expected that there would be one Local Enterprise Partnership for the whole of London, led by the London Major, and concern was expressed about whether outer London boroughs would have sufficient influence to highlight their specific needs, which were often very different to inner London. However it was also highlighted that there was expected to be very little funding available to the London LEP with most funding going to Northern LEPs and London expected to generate its own resources.

It was agreed to postpone the next meeting and work on a special agenda for the following meeting which was expected to be attended by the new chief executive Niall Bolger.
