Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Work starts on Wallington Square

For some time now your ward councillors have been working to encourage the owners of Wallington Square to develop the area, so we are very pleased to see that work has started converting the derelict office space at the front of the square into residential units. Also planned is work to improve the shop fronts at the entrance.

Planning approval was given back in January 2010 but nothing happened until the owners heard about the plans to improve the high street under the Wallington Integrated Transport Package. Colin, Monica & I met with the owner to explain the scheme. He was enthused by the plans and felt that it was now or never to capitalize on the investment in the area and develop the square. We also talked through what was needed to attract more shoppers into the square. We left it with the owner working on plans for phase two of the development.

Hopefully the work on Wallington Square, the new health centre at Shotfield which is starting to take shape, completion of the new retail and residential units in Canon House, and the high street and traffic improvement works following on from the station access work will together stimulate the local economy in Wallington bringing in new business and shoppers, as well as providing improved facilities for existing users and residents.

  1. I am really impressed with the work that has been taking place in Wallington. For years I have stayed away from the town centre. Finally it looks like it’s going to become a place that it’s residents can be proud off.

  2. This is good news that something is finally being done about Wallington Square. Otherwise it will stick out like a sore thumb compared with all the other improvements going on there.

  3. I e-mailed Mr Tom Brake sometime ago on the issue of Wallington Square as i wanted to know if possible when the revamp would be started as i felt the square had been left in a bad state for many years with empty shops etc. Now that some of the work has started i hope the far end of the square near Peacocks will also be brought up to stratch. The vandalism which took place after Xmas i think it was with shops being robbed and windows smashed only highlighted the problem, I think if Wallington wants to get more people to shop in the high street and the square it needs to get its act together regarding the look of the place and be less shabby hopfully this will happen soon.

  4. I am glad to hear that at last Wallington square revamp is going ahead. As my previous comment in 2012 said it is a real eyesore and has been left to go to rack and ruin for years. I have heard the building work starts soon. Thanks Jayne for your feedback regarding this issue I am grateful to you for taking the time to contact me.
