Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Wednesday 2nd March 2011 5.30pm

Meeting with Grant Shapps, Housing Minister

Our two local MPs Paul Burstow & Tom Brake had arranged a meeting with the Housing Minister to include myself and council leader Sean Brennan together with Frank Berry of SFTRA (Sutton Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations). At the meeting we acknowledged the favourable Decent Homes settlement Sutton had recently received, but aware that we were still left with a funding shortfall to bring all our housing stock up to decent homes standards we wanted to explore how this might be achieved under the Government’s new housing finance strategies. Some opportunities were outlined by the Minister and we were offered support from a civil servant from DCLG. Contact has since been made to take advantage of this support.

We also took the opportunity to highlight some of our concerns about items in the Localism Bill relating to housing, to which the Minister provided background and explanation.
