Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Opportunity Sutton Inward Investment Event

Cllr Jayne McCoy, Opportunity Sutton

Yesterday’s conference saw the culmination of an enormous amount of work to raise Sutton’s profile as a borough for business.

We are very grateful to Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills for agreeing to be our keynote speaker and proving a big attraction judging by the number of businesses in attendance.

The aim of the event was to outline the opportunities for new business and investment in Sutton, and showcase all the good things our borough has to offer.

Most impressive for me was that of the 25 speakers at the conference, 12 were businesses who spoke glowingly about the borough, and especially about their positive experiences working in partnership with the council.

I was there to launch our economic strategy ‘Opportunity Sutton – Unlocking Economic Growth’ with its stated aims of nurturing Sutton’s business base and attracting new investment, so it was good to hear that we just needed to build on and promote our existing excellent work with businesses.

Key feedback from the conference was recognition that Sutton was overlooked, and needed to promote itself and its opportunities more effectively to businesses, and that we should build on our emerging reputation as an incubator for new business and innovation. Our reputation for promoting the green agenda and commitment to practical sustainable solutions was already widely known, and there are opportunities to exploit this further.

I would like to thank the event sponsors: Schroders and Savills, CNM Estates, Valad and  JJ Homes, who not only supported the event financially, but  actively participated; as well as Holiday Inn Sutton for providing the venue and refreshments and media partners Sutton Guardian. The free cakes provided for tea by Patisserie Valerie were also extremely well received.

I would especially like to thank all the council officers involved for doing a great job representing Sutton, and give thanks to the conference organisers 3FoxInternational and White Label Consultants.

More details about the event and ongoing opportunities in Sutton are on the Opportunity Sutton website.

However this event is just the beginning of our strategy for sustainable economic growth in Sutton. The key to achieving this is ensuring that we deliver our agenda for action, and this will be a key focus for the council following on from this event.
