Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Save St Helier Picnic

Jayne McCoy

I joined with MPs, fellow Lib Dem councillors, hospital staff, local mums’ groups, the St Helier League of Friends, Sutton council staff, members of the Sutton Youth Parliament and lots and lots of local groups and residents at the picnic on the green in front of St Helier to show our support for the hospital and concerns about the threats to its services.

Having campaigned with the NCT to save the maternity unit previously and been delighted when not only was it saved but modernized to provide a fantastic midwife-led unit, I think it is a criminal waste of money to now close the maternity unit.

With three children I have had to make frequent use of St Mary’s children’s services and any parent will tell you how important it is not to have to drag your children all over town for such appointments or emergencies, especially when you have more than one child to cater for.

The proposals just don’t make sense for local people.
