Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Bringing residents and business together

Jayne McCoy, Colin Hall & OGRES

On Thursday Colin & I facilitated a meeting between a local business looking to expand its premises and OGRES – the Onslow Gardens Residents Association.

The business – The Monarch Partnership, located in Stafford Road close to Onslow Gardens, had had a previous planning application turned down after significant objection from local residents. On advice the Managing Director, Mr Dosanjh contacted us to explain the purpose of his development and see if we could help him find a way forward.

As we were aware that much of the opposition related to the proposed access to the site from Onslow Gardens, and misunderstandings about the nature of the development, we suggested that the businessman met with the local residents association to discuss his plans.

This duly took place and proved to be a productive and fruitful meeting. The business is now clear about what would be acceptable to local residents  in terms of development , and the OGRES representatives were reassured about the business’ plans and positive contribution to the area.

Cllr Hall & I recommended that the business sought pre-application advice and then when revised plans were drafted they be discussed with the residents association prior to submission to ensure there were no issues still of concern.

All parties seemed very happy with the outcomes of the meeting and it was good to see a local business willing to work with residents and respecting the impact its operation has on the locality. OGRES also appreciated the benefits of having an expanding business providing employment and supporting other local trading outlets.
