Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Dog fouling top nuisance for Wallington residents

2014-04-05 11.35.53

When talking to residents on the doorstep in Wallington South very many of you told us that you are happy with your area, with the cleanliness of the streets, the efficiency of the waste & recycling collection and the general maintenance, apart from one thing: dog mess. This was a recurring gripe from residents. Owners failing to pick up after their dogs is seen as anti-social behaviour and a nuisance to others using the area.

Dog mess is a health hazard that can cause blindness in humans, so it is not something you want to accidentally trample into your house.

It is an offence to let your dog foul the pavement or public land and if caught you can be fined up to £1,000. As a result of complaints from residents additional warning notices have been put up in Carew Road and Heathdene Road.

If you report dog fouling to Sutton council, officers will aim to clear it up within a couple of hours. The street cleaners will clear up any dog mess they find as part of their work. If a large number of complaints are received about a particular area the council will send out a special patrol to try and catch the culprit’s owner.

  1. Well, yes – almost every day on my way to the station there are fresh dollops of dog mess along Ross Road. I agree there is not much of a litter problem in Wallington, apart from Ross Road that is. I find it very strange how it is just that road where there’s a problem. Whatever the reason it is disgusting.
