Volunteers wanted to help Sutton Police Cadets

Volunteer cadets
Volunteers are being sought to help Sutton Volunteer Police Cadets run a full programme of regular meetings and activities throughout the year.

Sutton Volunteer Police Cadets has expanded over recent years and now number over 100 young people aged 13-18 years.

The cadets are split into two units meeting on either a Tuesday evening at Overton Grange School in Sutton, or on a Thursday evening at Stanley Park High School in Carshalton. Both meetings run from 7pm to 9.30pm during term-time only. Typical weekly activities could include first aid training, learning about policing, role playing, guest speakers, drill, team games and sports.

The cadet units offer young people the opportunity to undertake Duke of Edinburgh awards and to compete against other cadet units in various competitions throughout the year. These often involve weekend camps and outward-bound type challenges.

Locally, the cadets get involved in ‘test purchase’ operations to combat under-age alcohol and fireworks sales as well as supporting community events like Sutton United Family Fun Days, local community festivals and Remembrance Day parades. Cadets also support the Met at Central London events such as London Marathon, Trooping The Colour and Notting Hill Carnival.

Due to the growth of Sutton Volunteer Police Cadets, additional volunteers are needed to help the cadet co-ordinators PC Gill Nolan and PC Lorraine Roche to plan and deliver the widest possible range of activities. Ideally, volunteers should be able to commit to attending at least two evening meetings per month and be willing to support some of the other activities.

The cadet unit would particularly welcome volunteers with personal skills they could share. For example, they could be sport/PT coaches, have experience of drill, be first aid trainers, or have expertise in any other police related fields. The most important factor is enthusiasm and an interest in working with young people from a wide variety of backgrounds. All volunteers would be required to go through a vetting process.
