Diary of a Sutton Councillor

Wallington South provides borough’s First Citizen

Mayor of Sutton Cllr Steve Cook and local Sea Cadets

Wallington South once again has the honour of supplying a Mayor for the new municipal year as Cllr Steve Cook takes on the role of First Citizen of the borough. This means that Steve and his wife Pauline will be attending various events and civic functions representing the borough, and also raising money for the Mayor’s charities, St Helier Kidney Fund and Home Start Sutton.

The role means that Steve has to be non-political for his term, but don’t worry, he will still be able to take up ward casework as usual.

Wallington Cancer Research Shop needs your donated items

cancer research shop

The Cancer Research shop in Wallington town centre needs more of your donated items.

The shop is one of three quality charity shops in Wallington town centre but tends to miss out on donations because it is furthest away from the library car park. Because of its location at the Ross Parade end most donations get dropped off at the Oxfam or British Heart Foundation shops first.

If you arrive with a bag load of donations (which they hope you will) the nearest place to park is in Ross Parade where there are plenty of dedicated 30 minute free parking bays and usually spaces available. There are also similar bays in Beddington Gardens opposite Lidl, and of course there are the 84 half hour free spaces in the Library car park. Or you can pay to stay a little longer in the library car park and combine dropping off your donation with a bit of shopping or visit one of Wallington’s popular cafes.

When you drop your donated items into the shop make sure you ask for a Gift Aid form. If you fill this in the shop benefits from an extra 25% of the value of your donation when sold.

Items you can donate include:

  • Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing
  • Accessories including shoes, belts, handbags and jewellery
  • Quality homeware – anything from cushions to crockery
  • Linens
  • Books, CDs and DVDs
  • Mobile phones and used printer cartridges
  • Electricals (but please check with the shop before you donate these items)
